It was often used to oversee children while they played. Remember Petey? Then, as other breeds gained popularity, usually for their designer conformation ('attractiveness'), the pit bull fell by the wayside and eventually was bred with other breeds for fighting and aggressiveness and their inherent trustworthiness was overshadowed. The American pit bull is different from other bull dog breeds and yet they are typically lumped together. Many are actually American bulldogs, American Staffordshire terriers, boxer mixes, etc. And what percentage of pit bull traits gets a dog declared to be pit bull over whatever other breed he might be mixed with? But more importantly, the pit bull is more typically sweet natured and friendly when trained and socialized correctly. Please do not be turned off if a dog that appeals to you is labeled 'pit bull mix'. Come meet it. You will probably be pleasantly surprised and may consider adopting one of the most difficult dogs to find a home for, due to no fault of its own. Whatever dog you bring in to the family, all of the people need to be the pack leaders, whether adults or children. Follow this rule from day one, and no matter what dog you adopt, you'll be working to ensure an enjoyable experience. Pit mixes are typically strong and focused and will require regular exercise. A 'power breed waiver' may be required stating that you acknowledge that this dog will be strong and/or large and may need appropriate training and handling. (Less)

I found this dog on 10/8/14. I assumed Animal Services would help me give this dog the best life, and they've chosen to euthanize today because he has skin allergies that make him unappealing for adoption. I feel like I've doomed him to death. I have until 4:30 to find a guaranteed FOSTER home OR ADOPTION family for this sweet Pitbull, because he's due for euthanization tonight. If anyone is interested in temporarily fostering him until we can find a home, please contact me as he's under my name. If you're not interested, please spread the word. The dog is under my last name, and the director, Karen Buchanan is willing to work with me until ... (Read More)4:00 today. (Less)

Animal ID: Spanky  (male)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Heartworm Positive

Spanky found his way to our shelter after a good Samaritan picked him up out of the road. He was badly injured having just been hit by a car! Our organization scraped together the money for surgery as he was too fine of a dog to put him down just because of a broken leg. The expense of his medical treatment was far more than we should have spent, but the investment will pay off when he is adopted into a loving home. Spanky has fully healed and is ready to bid us farewell. He loves to go for walks...although he would prefer that you run with him now that his leg is fully healed. He has shown no aggression towards the other dogs or cats, but ... (Read More)they only interact through chainlink fencing. Although he is mild mannered, we recommend him only to experienced dog owners without small children based on his breed. ** UPDATE** Spanky tested positive for heartworm but is not showing any symptoms. Please consider adopting this great guy if you have the financial means to get him treated. This boy has already endured so much, please dont let heartworms be a death sentence for him! (Less)

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

What a great guy Rocky is! He's in the office with me as I write this and I feel so safe alone in a secluded area as he barks quite strongly when anyone knocks on the door. yet the moment I tell him it's okay, he just sits and watches me in case I need him. He is sweet and mild mannered, but he will scare anyone who means you harm! I can take a rawhide away from him without issue, put my face to his and love on him like a stuffed animal. Rocky is neutered, heartworm negative and quite healthy overall. He loves going for walks and is quite polite inside. I can't guarantee that he's housebroke, but he hasn't tried to go potty in the ... Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Vaccinations Current

Oh this sweet girl is afraid of her own shadow! She has such a timid but curious nature to her. She desperately wants affection, but is too afraid to accept it. She is slowly coming out of her shell but definitely needs a tender person to help her step out of her world of fear. She showed no signs of abuse when she arrived, but was very skinny. She eventually warms up to men or women. When frightened, she just drops to the ground, but allows you to pick her up if need be. She's never tried to growl or nip when afraid, even when cornered. She's just starting to bark for attention which is a huge step for her. She gets along well with ... (Read More)other dogs although she's had limited interaction with them in our shelter. We've had her in with an obnoxious puppy and she tolerated her very well. Please consider adding Shadow to your home if you can provide a peaceful environment where she can learn to be a dog. (Less)

Buddy is the iconic dog...perpetually happy regardless of his circumstances! He is a high energy dog despite a slight heart murmur that appears to be harmless. When he gets excited, he bounces off the ground with all fours. He's been in our shelter way too long and we can't keep him forever even if we'd like to! He is sweet and non-aggressive towards other dogs. He just an all around good guy who needs a home that's better than chain link and concrete. Can you provide such a place for this sweet boy before his time in the shelter runs out?

Personality: Average Energy, Submissive

Missy is one of those sweet, unspoiled pit bulls that could be an ambassador for the breed. She showed up at a school one day and was obviously a beloved pet at one time. She is well mannered and sweet, but quite sad being in "jail" when she clearly had a home at one time. We try to help her enjoy life with a carpet and periodic walks, but what she really needs is a real home. She is non-aggressive towards other dogs, but quite interested in cats.     Karma is a smaller, young adult female pit bull that was found abandoned this summer and was taken to a vet for care/spaying/shots. Karma needed a home because they didn't have room for her long term at the vet so I volunteered to take Karma into my home while I looked for a good forever home for her. She's been with me for a month, and she's going great, but I've been unsuccessful in finding her a home within my network of friends and family. She is being spoiled rotten with me, but I am a single man who is away for work for 10-11 hours a day and I don't have a fence for her to play/run. l love fostering her, but I didn't want a dog in ... (Read More)the long run, I just wanted to help. She's perfectly safe, healthy, and happy with me until she finds a forever home. I have a boy cat, and although Karma wanted to eat him for dinner at first, they are now good friends. She is fixated on other cats we meet on our walks, but I have no doubt, with training, that she'll befriend other cats. Karma is crate trained and knows several basic commands. She knows sit, down, heal, 'free dog' (that's when she can break heal for potty breaks), sit at the door and not walk out until I say 'ok', and we are learning 'drop it'. She is dog aggressive, but no more than what's average for her breed. She loves to play and is good with children. My neighbor's 4yo daughter pets her daily! The only ailment she has is 'happy tail', so the tip of her tail is scabbed over. It doesn't bleed and she doesn't lick it. Oh, and she snores at night :) She has no ticks/fleas, and she doesn't mind a bath too much. (Less)

This sweet guy is in foster care. He is listed as a pit bull mix (see below). Please note: shelter is overflowing and in desperate need of foster homes. Please call if this is a possibility, even if temporary. Please read completely: FOR INFORMATION ON THIS ANIMAL PLEASE CONTACT 256-883-3783. BE SURE TO HAVE ID# READY. Animals at this shelter are held a reasonable amount of time so at the time of posting it is adoptable and not in immediate danger. However, the time period is limited depending upon the shelter population. Please note: THE SHELTER IS FULL. If you are interested in fostering, the need is great and we would love to have you. ... (Read More) If you are interested in adopting me: 1) Write down my Animal ID # . 2) Make sure to mention Animal ID # when visiting or calling. 3) Remember all adoptions stop 30 minutes prior to closing time. 3) You will not be allowed to place a hold on me. 4) I cannot be shipped to you. 5) Before adopting me, you can spend time with me outside or in a meet and greet room. Please ask for assistance. 6) We take cash, checks, debit cards, VISA and Mastercard as a method of payment. **IMPORTANT: Huntsville Animal Services cannot guarantee that I will still be available for adoption as we do not hold animals for anyone under any circumstances. Animals are adopted on a first come, first serve basis. You may want to call and ask if I am still available prior to visiting the shelter. When you adopt me, I will stay at the shelter and be taken to the veterinarian of your choice where I will be spayed or neutered before going to my new home. If I am already spayed or neutered, I can go home with you upon adoption. My adoption cost is very affordable and includes my adoption fee, spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, license (if you live within Huntsville city limits), a collar and personalized ID tag. Please know that a high percentage of animals in the shelter are brought in as strays. It is impossible to know anything about a stray animal and many times we can only make our best educated guess on breeds, age, etc. Every animal you see posted here has passed a general temperament test as performed by shelter staff and it is considered to be non-aggressive. ADOPTION FEES Dogs: $80 - 170 - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention; purebred dogs and puppies tend to cost more and dogs that have been in the shelter longer will probably cost less. Cats: The shelter is currently running a $35 special on cats. (regularly $80) - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, feline aids/leukemia testing, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention LICENSE FEES $10 - 1 year license $35 - Lifetime license EVERY ADOPTER RESIDING IN THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, AL WILL BE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE ONE OF THE ABOVE LICENSE OPTIONS AT TIME OF ADOPTION OPTIONAL SERVICES $10 - Heartworm test. Blood test known as the 'snap test' that shows when heart worm antigens are present in the blood. $20 - Microchip. Another line of defense to help you get your pet back in the event he/she is lost. This is especially recommended for those pets known to climb fences, chew collars/tags, etc. Start your new pup out right by gentle training and socialization. 'Pit bull mixes': Pit bull mixes get a bad rap. First of all, the American Pit bull was historically a dog that was intelligent, loyal and trusted. (Less)

Hi you most beautiful thing I have ever seen! I am Sara. Have a seat next to me, rub my belly and lets talk all about beautiful me. So as you can see I am a pitbull and I was born sometime late 2011 or early 2012. I recently had puppies and the staff here at this really neat singles resort G.R.A.C.E. is getting me taken care of so I can have no more children. Thank you Lord because giving birth is a chore. I was rescued off the streets and given such a nice room with a nice comfy bed. I love all the staff here because they say I am the most beautiful sweetest girl they have ever seen! When you look into my eyes I can make you fall in love ... (Read More)with me. I am a perfect weight of 50 pounds and I am kinda on the short side which is fine with me. I am searching for a wonderful home where I can give everyone my unconditional love. I enjoy giving kisses and I really enjoy my belly being rubbed. I am your typical pitbull, a major couch potato. As much as I enjoy this resort I really want a home I can call my own. A place where I can have my very own warm couch to lay on. I haven't been at G.R.A.C.E very long and the staff is working with me to see how I get along with other dogs. With me anything goes as long as I have a treat. So how about you bring a ham and cheese sandwich and lets discuss my future with you and which side of the couch I will be able to have. Lots of slobbery kisses sent your way for a lifetime ~ Sara (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Pit Bull in Alabama
Pit Bull Dogs can make good pets in Alabama if they match your IifestyIe. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a powerful dog with an undeserved reputation for inherent viciousness. A Pit Bull that receives attention, firm training, and thorough socialization makes a wonderful family guardian that is trustworthy with children. Pit Bulls need committed, experienced owners that exude leadership. Pit Bulls excel at high level obedience with proper training. Pit Bulls have been bred for dog fights, and unfortunately a dog that is abused, neglected, or whose instinctive aggression is encouraged, can become hostile and dangerous. Pit Bulls can adapt to apartment life with enough exercise.

lnteresting Pit Bull Trivia Low-Cost Alabama Spay & Neuter Clinics
Some people believe that Pit Bulls are identical to what Bulldogs were in the past. A disproportionate number of Pit Bulls are put down in major American cities each year. American Pit Bull Terriers are very similar, and some argue identical, to Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
