Animals at this shelter are held a reasonable amount of time so at the time of posting it is adoptable and not in immediate danger. However, the time period is limited depending upon the shelter population. Please note: THE SHELTER IS FULL. If you are interested in fostering, the need is great and we would love to have you. If you are interested in adopting me: 1) Write down my Animal ID # . 2) Make sure to mention Animal ID # when visiting or calling. 3) Remember all adoptions stop 30 minutes prior to closing time. 3) You will ... (Read More)not be allowed to place a hold on me. 4) I cannot be shipped to you. 5) Before adopting me, you can spend time with me outside or in a meet and greet room. Please ask for assistance. 6) We take cash, checks, debit cards, VISA and Mastercard as a method of payment. **IMPORTANT: Huntsville Animal Services cannot guarantee that I will still be available for adoption as we do not hold animals for anyone under any circumstances. Animals are adopted on a first come, first serve basis. You may want to call and ask if I am still available prior to visiting the shelter. When you adopt me, I will stay at the shelter and be taken to the veterinarian of your choice where I will be spayed or neutered before going to my new home. If I am already spayed or neutered, I can go home with you upon adoption. My adoption cost is very affordable and includes my adoption fee, spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, license (if you live within Huntsville city limits), a collar and personalized ID tag. Please know that a high percentage of animals in the shelter are brought in as strays. It is impossible to know anything about a stray animal and many times we can only make our best educated guess on breeds, age, etc. Every animal you see posted here has passed a general temperament test as performed by shelter staff and it is considered to be non-aggressive. ADOPTION FEES Dogs: $80 - 170 - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention; purebred dogs and puppies tend to cost more and dogs that have been in the shelter longer will probably cost less. Cats: The shelter is currently running a $35 special on cats. (regularly $80) - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, feline aids/leukemia testing, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention LICENSE FEES $10 - 1 year license $35 - Lifetime license EVERY ADOPTER RESIDING IN THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, AL WILL BE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE ONE OF THE ABOVE LICENSE OPTIONS AT TIME OF ADOPTION OPTIONAL SERVICES $10 - Heartworm test. Blood test known as the 'snap test' that shows when heart worm antigens are present in the blood. $20 - Microchip. Another line of defense to help you get your pet back in the event he/she is lost. This is especially recommended for those pets known to climb fences, chew collars/tags, etc. Start your new pup out right by gentle training and socialization. If you confront a behavior problem you are not sure what to do about, Laurel Rose is a dog trainer in Huntsville who has offered to meet with people who adopt dogs from the Huntsville Animal Shelter for a free evaluation. Phone is: (256) 890-1234. 'Pit bull mixes': Pit bull mixes get a bad rap. First of all, the American Pit bull is different from other bull dog breeds and yet they are typically lumped together. Many are actually American bulldogs, American Staffordshire terriers, boxer mixes, etc. And what percentage of pit bull traits gets a dog declared to be pit bull over whatever other breed he might be mixed with? But more importantly, the pit bull is more typically sweet natured and friendly when trained and socialized correctly. Please do not be turned off if a dog that appeals to you is labeled 'pit bull mix'. Come meet it. You will probably be pleasantly surprised and may consider adopting one of the most difficult dogs to find a home for, due to no fault of its own. Whatever dog you bring in to the family, all of the people need to be the pack leaders, whether adults or children. Follow this rule from day one, and no matter what dog you adopt, you'll be working to ensure an enjoyable experience. Pit mixes are typically strong and focused and will require regular exercise. A 'power breed waiver' may be required stating that you acknowledge that this dog will be strong and/or large and may need appropriate training and handling. (Less)

(Less)

This is Vann and he is so stinkin sweet. He loves everyone and everything. Just look at that face, can you believe he ended up in a high kill shelter. We just couldn't let this little guy stay there any longer. Since he is still a puppy, he still has a lot of growing to do.He is extremely intelligent and prefers the company of others including the 4 legged variety. He likes to play as well as cuddle. He is learning to walk on a leash and loves his crate. Can you open up your heart and home to this sweet little boy and watch him grow into a beautiful well mannered dog.

Jacob was surrendered to a high kill shelter with his brother, Jack. They both have been saved and are looking for their forever homes. Jacob is very sweet and eager to please. He listens well and because he is still a puppy, he is very trainable. Jacob would be a great companion for any family or a single person. Can't you open up this sweet boy to your heart and home.

Animal lovers I need your help! My niece and her husband are moving to MN for grad school and can not keep their dogs. I am going to foster them as long as I can to try to find a new home for both of them. Both are approximately 7 years old and about 65 pounds each. We would like to find them a home together, but would understand if someone could only adopt one of them. Both are spayed, HW negative, and up to date on all vaccinations. They are house trained and mostly live indoors. They are very people-friendly and are great companions. The only other alternative would have been put them down. Please help!

Follow this rule from day one, and no matter what dog you adopt, you'll have an enjoyable experience. Pit mixes are typically strong and focused and will require regular exercise. A 'power breed waiver' may be required stating that you acknowledge that this dog will be strong and/or large and may need appropriate training and handling. (Less)

This young lady is about 1-3 years old and needs a loving forever home. Please see below regarding 'pit bull mixes' and then come meet her! Please read completely: FOR INFORMATION ON THIS ANIMAL PLEASE CONTACT 256-883-3783. BE SURE TO HAVE ID# READY. Animals at this shelter are held a reasonable amount of time so at the time of posting it is adoptable and not in immediate danger. However, the time period is limited depending upon the shelter population. Please note: THE SHELTER IS FULL. If you are interested in fostering, the need is great and we would love to have you. If you are interested in adopting me: 1) Write down my Animal ID # . ... (Read More)2) Make sure to mention Animal ID # when visiting or calling. 3) Remember all adoptions stop 30 minutes prior to closing time. 3) You will not be allowed to place a hold on me. Pit mixes are typically strong and focused and will require regular exercise. A 'power breed waiver' may be required stating that you acknowledge that this dog will be strong and/or large and may need appropriate training and handling. (Less)

She is very sweet & submissive with all animals and people. Lacey loves kids and other dogs. Though she hasn't been around cats, we think she will be fine with them, though a controlled meet and greet is suggested as with any new dog. Lacey is up to date on her shots, heartworm negative and spayed. She is ready to meet ... (Read More)you! (Less)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Dolly has a rough start in her short 3 years of life. It is thought she was not treated well by her owner, then ended up in a high kill shelter, was pulled for an adopter that never came for her and got stuck in boarding for months. She is currently in a foster home and learning to be a dog again. She is very calm and sweet. She does not like cats. She tolerates other dogs but would probably do best as the only dog. This girl deserves a second chance at a better life. Can you do that for her?

Celeste is a wonderful wonderful girl. She is laid back and quiet and doesn't cause any problems at all. She was surrendered to the Marshall County Pound because she chases cattle, horses, and chickens. Because of this we would not recommend a home with cats or any other livestock. Celeste is great with the other dogs in the foster home and would be fine with any dog, male or female. She is great with adults as well as children. She loves to go for rides and walks. Celeste is spay, UTD on shots, Heart Worm negative and on monthly preventatives.

Roxy is a big energetic and super loving girl. She craves attention and would love to find a home where she has room to run and play. She is rooming with another dog Blue. They get along great. If looking for a pair, these two would fit the bill. If not that's okay, Roxy is ready to go to anyone who will give her some love and a stable home. We would however prefer she go to a home without young children simply because of her energy level.

Hi you most beautiful thing I have ever seen! I am Sara. Have a seat next to me, rub my belly and lets talk all about beautiful me. So as you can see I am a pitbull and I was born sometime late 2011 or early 2012. I recently had puppies and the staff here at this really neat singles resort G.R.A.C.E. is getting me taken care of so I can have no more children. Thank you Lord because giving birth is a chore. I was rescued off the streets and given such a nice room with a nice comfy bed. I love all the staff here because they say I am the most beautiful sweetest girl they have ever seen! When you look into my eyes I can make you fall in love ... (Read More)with me. I am a perfect weight of 50 pounds and I am kinda on the short side which is fine with me. I am searching for a wonderful home where I can give everyone my unconditional love. I enjoy giving kisses and I really enjoy my belly being rubbed. I am your typical pitbull, a major couch potato. As much as I enjoy this resort I really want a home I can call my own. A place where I can have my very own warm couch to lay on. I haven't been at G.R.A.C.E very long and the staff is working with me to see how I get along with other dogs. With me anything goes as long as I have a treat. So how about you bring a ham and cheese sandwich and lets discuss my future with you and which side of the couch I will be able to have. Lots of slobbery kisses sent your way for a lifetime ~ Sara (Less)

Hi! I am Zeke short for Ezekiel. I was found wandering on a local highway with a very bad skin infection and lost all of my hair. Fortunately a very nice lady came along and picked me up and brought me to the rescue group where I have been living for the past year. My skin infection has cleared up and I have gotten most of my hair back and if I must say I look very handsome. I play well with other dogs. I really think I am a lap dog, I love to give tons of kisses. I love to have my belly rubbed. I am just waiting for that special someone to take me home.

Morgan is a female Retriever/pit mix who is approximately 8 months old. PIease Read Before Adopting a Pit Bull in Alabama
Pit Bull Dogs can make good pets in Alabama if they match your IifestyIe. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a powerful dog with an undeserved reputation for inherent viciousness. A Pit Bull that receives attention, firm training, and thorough socialization makes a wonderful family guardian that is trustworthy with children. Pit Bulls need committed, experienced owners that exude leadership. Pit Bulls excel at high level obedience with proper training. Pit Bulls have been bred for dog fights, and unfortunately a dog that is abused, neglected, or whose instinctive aggression is encouraged, can become hostile and dangerous. Pit Bulls can adapt to apartment life with enough exercise.
