I have trained her to pull me on my skateboard so she can get a work out and ware her self out. She has since been cleaned up and all ticks gotten rid of, she is eating well and gaining weight. I am an 82 YO woman, living alone with my 2 dogs. I adopted Phantom in N.O. where he was a street dog. He was watched closely on the Internet by the neighborhood, which detected no known problems. Then he disappeared, but re-surfaced with a stage 4 heartworm infestation. I had offered to foster him but decided to adopt him, at which time he was neutered, microchipped and treated at our lovely animal shelter. He was a great dog with no bad habits. Then I had a severe arm break, with 6 days in hospital, at which time friends and neighbors came in to feed, water, and walk my 2 dogs (Phantom & old black lab). My son in CA asked me to ... (Read More)move to Alhambra to be close to him, so we bought a house. For a year we had no insurmountable problems, although Phantom frightened the male workers who worked daily on repairing the house; I'm sure he felt their fear, and he barked and dashed (on a tether and from his yard) but we managed the renovations. He also challenged people coming up the front steps but when friends started to visit, after initially barking, he settled down and was friendly. The bad thing was that he became a 'runner' again, and when he got loose he would dash down the street, which terrorized the neighborhood (still 'foreign' to me.) I did not know that Alhambra has Draconian dog laws and zero tolerance, although I appreciate that my dog, at full speed, would look frightening. On the other hand, a visiting 6 YO girl who loves dogs and wanted to walk him, leashed him on her own and walked him around my large back yard very quietly and sedately. In the past 5 months Phantom has been reported four times 'running loose,' with visits from Animal Control; (The first time seemed unfair, as I flagged down a passing police car to beg for help) he was pepper-sprayed and ran back home - fine with me except he now had a 'record.' More recently, and much more seriously, he was being chased by a passing 'helper', unfortunately right toward two girls with a small dog, which he grabbed for and injured moderately (I paid the $404 vet's bill and no charges were pressed) He did not touch the girls (although the 15 YO was bitten on the thumb by the little dog) and as soon as the little dog began to yelp, Phantom stopped, sat down, and looked bewildered. I felt terrible about the affair, but now Phantom is probably deemed a 'menace.' He is now waiting 'execution' on June 9, at the Downey animal 'shelter'as I DID NOT UNDERSTAND that by signing the form the last officer gave me I LOST MY RIGHTS TO A HEARING - I thought I was still entitled to a legal hearing!!! My son is out of town right now, and the old Lab cries at the door, and I cry when I think of my awful mistake, and the house feels very empty. One ray of hope (a lawyer quoted $7500 for a restraining order) may be to have someone 'adopt' him. The father of the 6-YO will go today to try to adopt him (and gain time) and say that he knows the dog and is not afraid of him, but I have a horrible dread that this might not work. If we can get him back, he will go to a boarding/training facility and then put up for adoption, while I intend to foster a shelter dog. Does anyone have any suggestions or see any hope for us? I found this dog scared and walking around a levee road in Stockton, CA. I tried hard to find the owners but 3 weeks later I haven't heard anything. We believe he is a purebred American Pit Bull Terrier. He is still young; he isn't even 1 yet. So he still has the energy and attention span of a puppy. He is a fantastic dog. (Read More)did become very excited when I dried him off with the towel though. He does jump on people (puppy) but that is an easy trainable fix. (Update: he IS learning it's not good.) UPDATE: CRATE TRAINED and HOUSE TRAINED now. We started putting him in the crate at night. Now he loves his crate and will go right in if you tell him to, even the times that he doesn't want to. He is very good with other dogs, but behaves slightly better when our dogs are put up. However - it could be our dogs too (one of ours is very mischievous and gets him riled up pretty well.) He has learned what cats are and knows they don't like playing with dogs. Also we have been teaching him to not eat out of the other dogs bowls - he still slips sometimes but it's gotten a LOT better! He's staring at me with those puppy dog eyes now so we're going to go take a walk.
