Sweet Anna. She came to our shelter as a stray with a young dog that we think was one of her many puppies. The puppy was adopted and now it's Anna's turn to find a loving home. Trenton residents are notorious for over-breeding dogs to make money off the puppies and then eventually abandoning the mom. This was likely what happened to Anna. She has a saggy belly that will firm up a little in time but she will probably never have tight abs of steel. Good afternoon, I am writing as a volunteer from Liberty Humane Society. I am writing out of desperation. Over the past five months, I have spent a lot of time and grown close to one particular dog who has not been adopted. Manny is a 1-2 year old pitbull terrier/sharpei mix. He is constantly getting overlooked and finding him a home has been difficult. He is the shelter's longest resident and is starting to become depressed and agitated. He needs what every dog needs: a balanced diet, exercise, training, attention, love. Unfortunately, Manny came from a bully situation - so he is not comfortable with other dogs and cats. We are working ... (Read More)on creating positive experiences with him in a public setting so that he grows somewhat more trusting and less afraid. He should still be the only dog but with encouragement and proper training, his fixations can be tempered. Sometimes, Manny can get overly excited and accidentally head butt you with his big noggin - especially if he's trying to jump in your LAP. He's convinced he's a lap dog. His is eager and VERY smart, he's happily learn new commands with treats. He looooooooooooooves treats! Right now knows sit, down, paw and we're working on other tricks to show off! He likes very long walks and if you sit still for too long, he might bark to say, 'Let's go!' He doesn't show much attention to toys. He doesn't mind bicycles or runners or loud noises (think, the light rail passing in front of you!) He's very observant and likes to watch others at play and passerbys and he really likes to wiggle his butt into you and be warm and snuggly :) Manny and I went hiking on Friday, December 30th at Mill Creek Marsh and then walked around the plaza. He did great! He really enjoyed sniffing EVERYthing and didn't care for the birds or other animals. He enjoyed peering down at the water and looking over the bridge. Afterwards, he sat in a girl's lap and licked another little boy. It's funny because he's drawn to certain family and goes to them. His tail wags and he even pulls me to them. Other people we can pass by and he'll sniff but not care at all. He's good in the car, doesn't care about loud noises, no prey drive, I took his food and he didn't care, he knows touch apparently. He did so so so so well. Unfortunately, Manny is currently on bite hold. The reason behind this is that, when he walks past the runs in the back, he will bark at the other dogs and turn his head and redirect his agitation on the nearest thing that he can get to which is usually whoever is walking him, and bite. He has never bitten in any other situation and is NOT dog reactive in public. He is very manageable, except in that instance. Manny came from a situation in which he was being terrorized by another dog in the home and was brought in my animal control. At first, he was terrified of any living, moving thing. Now, after being in a confined space for so long, he is starting to get very anxious and upset. My hope is that, despite these flaws, Manny will never, ever be in a situation where he needs to walk past 15 barking and lunging dogs, just to go outside for some fresh air. Every time I am with him, we work on creating positive interactions with other dogs and he has done wonderfully! He'd still prefer to be the only dog but with an experienced owner, he can absolutely flourish and ignore other dogs with the proper training. Alize is 1yr 5 months. She was born July 4, 2010. She is black and white, full of energy. She is a jumper and thetefore must be kept in a high fenced yard as she will jump the fence. Alize has skin allergies since she was 2 months old and diagnosed by her Vet. She is playful with other dogs but at times gets carried away and another dog may get annoyed by this act. He is a brindle colored pitbull and was living in a home 2 years ago but is now in a shelter in South Orange, New Jersey and is not doing well living the shelter life. Racheal is a sweet red pitt bull that i rescued last year. She was very thin, to the point that all her ribs and her back bones were sticking out. She weighed about 30 lbs. when she should have been about 55 to 60lbs. Racheal also had loose bowels, she would go about 15 times a night and it was mostly water which caused her to be dehydrated. Black pit mix, possibly some Lab, Misty was also rescued 2 years ago. Likely abused, because she is very fearful, but she is very loving and comes alive to chase squirrels and other small animals. Not good with cats for the same reason =) But VERY gentle with kids, lets them dress her up, and likes to lounge with family to watch TV. Misty is about 45 lbs, black with a white stripe on her face and a white chest, with big, soulfull brown eyes. Again, another heartbreaker. A Pit Bull that receives attention, firm training, and thorough socialization makes a wonderful family guardian that is trustworthy with children. Pit Bulls need committed, experienced owners that exude leadership. Pit Bulls excel at high level obedience with proper training. Pit Bulls have been bred for dog fights, and unfortunately a dog that is abused, neglected, or whose instinctive aggression is encouraged, can become hostile and dangerous. Pit Bulls can adapt to apartment life with enough exercise.
