Rescue Me ID: 18-04-19-00012Max (male)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

I am an affectionate and playful boy initially adopted from a shelter at 4 months and lived with a family whose lifestyle just couldn't meet my needs which not only includes a fenced-in yard but more importantly, someone who enjoys hanging with me, giving me the kind of attention, exercise, playtime, training and mental stimulation that will nurture the very best in me. Below is a summary of an evaluation conducted* to assess general temperament and aptitude: Max is neutered and micro-chipped and appears to be enjoying good health. He showed no signs of fear or anxiety when removed from a familiar environment to an unknown one. He loves ... (Read More)people and was quick to trust the tester despite her being a stranger. He came when called and followed her around with minimal encouragement. Max showed no food or toy aggression during this evaluation, allowed himself to be touched on his face and body, and except for a moving and running vacuum cleaner, showed no fear or anxiety to a number of loud noises and strange objects. Max demonstrated a high level of intelligence which, along with his strong desire to please, should make training him a delight. When introduced to a non-aggressive, friendly and playful 15 month old Great Pyrenees, slightly larger in height and weight, Max was playful, showed no aggression but quickly became overstimulated, jumping up and nipping at the other dog's ears so it would be important to provide well-supervised opportunities to develop better manners with other dogs. To be successful, Max needs physical and mental exercise, at least 1 %BD to 2 hours daily to keep him healthy. Be sure he had a rain jacket and an insulated coat when walking or playing outside in cold weather to keep his body warm. Do not omit walks but add more indoor activities during the winter months. Spice together time up, playing tug and fetch, mental stimulation games, multiple training sessions, walking and running. The more opportunities you give dogs to burn away their physical and mental excess energy, the less likely they will cause havoc at home. Formal positive reinforcement training consistently reinforced, though time consuming, will help him become a well-mannered, self-confident and beloved member of the family and in the process enrich the bond you share. Max is fun-loving and delightful and deserves a great home. Interested parties should consider if they have the space and time to cater his needs described above. If you cannot, then please do not adopt this dog or any pet for that matter. You also have to realize that training this mixed breed dog will take up plenty of your time, and money if you opt to take the professional route. As loving and attentive as these dogs can be, you have to train and socialize them from the start if you want to bring out their positive traits. Evaluation/recommendations completed by Gina Dias, senior trainer and owner of Gina's Doggie Den (professional canine services) in Parma,OH. Leave message at 440-842-3322 if interested in Max. Animal ID: 100575Texas (male)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected

Texas is an incredibly sweet dog. He gets along great with most people and animals. He loves to cuddle and is very docile most of the time. However he does get energetic and needs to be played with or walked often. His main problem is that he has severe separation anxiety, most likely from previous owners neglect. He is also not crate trained. He would need an owner who can be with him most of the time, perhaps someone who works from home. We have left him alone before and he usually does fine if it is only one hour, but after several hours he starts to destroy things.

Say hello to Bert! We received this pup from the Stark County Dog Warden last week and he is currently being fostered with another dog, who he gets along with pretty well. When his foster brother is tired of playing or doesn't want to play, he corrects Bert and Bert takes the hint. Bert is a sweet guy, who still has lots of puppy energy and will need a home where someone is willing to work with him on basic manners. His foster momma says that he would make a great running or jogging partner for someone. Bert is a super awesome fence-jumper, so he will need to be supervised at all times when outside, no matter how tall your fence is! While he ... (Read More)is energetic, Bert does love a good cuddle and will chill when he's had plenty of time to exercise. He'll be starting training soon and we will update his bio once we see how he progresses. Bertie is excited to have his very own family one day soon! Rescue Me ID: 18-04-02-00475Hope (female)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Spayed, Needs Vaccinations, Abused/Neglected

In early February 2018, a home renovator found a female dog that was neglected and near death at a house where he was working. The animal was friendly enough, but quite emaciated. She was under 30 lbs., and was small enough to be mistaken for an Italian greyhound. She would drink, but wouldn't take food, despite her condition. We got the call. The owner surrendered the dog to us, and we took it to our local emergency vet, who determined that it had swallowed some object that was blocking her digestive tract. We were told that we had about 48 hours before she would be too weak to tolerate the surgery that she required. It was an easy ... (Read More)decision. The dog had surgery to remove the blockage. And because it was convenient, she was spayed as well. A vet tech suggested that we name her 'Hope'. She had an excellent recovery, considering her weakened condition, and was discharged from the hospital in late February. Since then, she has gained weight (we don't know how much, but at least you can't count her ribs anymore). We discovered that she was not house-trained, but by using a crate and managing her daily schedule, we consider that we've solved THAT problem. Hope is a VERY affectionate dog. She does best late at night, before her bedtime, when she will alternate between licking your hands and face and curling up at your feet. She will also obey simple commands, such as 'sit' in the house, as well as 'stop' and 'cross' at street corners. But as her strength returned, we discovered that she has a great deal of energy, and is dominant to other dogs, especially smaller dogs. She will also try to jump on humans, a habit that we have been unable to break her of. In addition to this domination behavior, she pulls on the leash during her walks, and will not heel when other dogs are present. In spite of all these things, every now and again, she will walk with a pack of dogs without incident, showing her potential as a great pet. We also notice that she is a bit orally fixated, perhaps because she was not weaned properly. This is likely how she got into trouble to begin with. We are at the point now where Hope will ignore cloth and other non-food objects ALMOST of the time, but even after four weeks, we are not confident that we have resolved this very important issue. But let's be honest. Perfect dogs, however you define that, don't get neglected and abused. Hope is a wonderful dog, and wants to learn how to behave, but she came to us 'broken', and we've only done part of the job to fix her. She needs a strong, experienced leader to bring out her best qualities. We think that she will do best in a home where she's the only dog, with a family who are aware of her past, and will commit to spending the time and effort to finish what we've started. (Less)

Hello my name is Phil! I am a friendly, wonderful dog. I do not like cats or dominant male dogs. I would do best in a home without any children. I can be a little powerful, but I just love attention. I need a home where I can have companionship throughout the day. Rescue Me ID: 18-03-27-00244Stella (female)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi there. My name is Stella. I'm about 1-2 years old and I weigh about 50 lbs. I was completely emaciated upon my arrival to the shelter. I need to gain about another 15 lbs. The night after I came in to pound, I gave birth to a single puppy but it wasn't alive. I was very sad after that. I went to the vet just to make sure there were no more babies in my frail, emaciated body but there weren't. Now that I have been here for several days, I am putting on weigh and I'm acting like a normal, happy dog. I get along with some, but not all other dogs, so you should bring any other pets to meet me. I am a very loving, cuddly dog with people. If ... (Read More)you're looking for a sweet dog to add to your family, please consider adopting me. Our adoption fee is $120.00. The adoption fee must be paid in CASH. We are unable to accept personal checks or credit/debit cards for adoption fees. ALL dogs/puppies adopted from our shelter will receive their parvo distemper vaccine, bordetella vaccine, rabies vaccine (if aged at 12 weeks or older), be dewormed with a 3 day course of panacur dewormer, be microchipped, receive their current Ohio dog license and will be spayed or neutered. ALL DOGS/PUPPIES WILL BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED unless a health issue prohibits the surgery from being performed. Not all dogs posted for adoption are spayed/ neutered yet. If you're driving a long distance to adopt, please verify that the vetting process has been completed and dog you're interested in adopting is still available for adoption. The above mentioned vetting is all included in your adoption fee. The adoption fee and what is included in the adoption fee is NON-NEGOTIABLE. Adoptions MUST be done at the pound and in person as there is paperwork to fill out and an adoption contract that must be signed by the adopter. This means you must be willing to travel to our shelter to adopt. IF the dog you're interested in adopting has medical conditions or injuries which require medical treatment, we ask that you help with the medical bills so we can continue to help the dogs coming in who need additional vet care. We are a county run shelter, therefore we cannot control our intake or the health or behavior of the dogs that come in to our shelter. Although we try our hardest to place all of our adoptable dogs, there are certain circumstances in which any dog in our care could be euthanized at any time and without further notice (IE: sudden untreatable medical condition or injury, temperament or behavioral problems which may not be apparent when the dog first arrives, lack or space, etc.), therefore all dogs at our shelter should be considered urgent. The adoption of a more highly adoptable dog will mean more time for the less adoptable dog in the kennel next to him! Shelter hours are: Monday-Friday: 8 am- 4 pm Saturday: 9 am- 12 pm. The pound is CLOSED to the public on Sunday. There is nobody in the office on Saturday and Sunday, so therefore we are unable to answer or return phone calls over the weekend. Can't adopt a dog? We would love to have more volunteers who are able to spend time with our dogs! The dogs LOVE going for walks and the socialization and exercise helps make the dogs more adoptable. Rescue Me ID: 18-03-26-00175Meila (female)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi there. My name is Meila. I'm about 5 years old and I weigh about 50 lbs. My friend Morgan and I were seized by a pound deputy after a call was received in reference to us living in extremely deplorable, neglectful conditions. When we were found, I was emaciated with an extremely bloated 'pot belly'. I ended up needing an extremely expensive and very long, extensive surgery to remove foreign objects, including plastic, uncooked beans, duct tape and mulch-like wood chips from my GI tract. So basically, we were eating whatever we could find to survive. I am still recovering from my surgery but I am doing well overall. I'm putting on ... (Read More)weight well and I'm acting like a happy dog. I'm super duper sweet and loving with human beings of all sizes. I get along well with most other dogs, but I especially love my friend Morgan. I am a pretty clean little girl. I definitely seem like I'm housebroken. If you're looking for a great dog to add to your family, please consider adopting me. Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

At first blush, Mandolin seems like a big, gentle softie. While he definitely enjoys cuddling with his human and is even relaxed enough to hang out in the City Dogs office, he has some secret spunk! Around other dogs, he truly feels comfortable and loosens up enough to wrestle and play. Sure, he might be a little shy at first but once he warms up, he is a blast. Public hours are Monday through Saturday from 10am-3pm, and Sunday 12-2pm. The CITY DOGS mission is to increase adoptions from the City Kennel by changing the image of the pit bulls who make up the majority of the kennel population, by preparing all adoptable dogs in the kennel for lives in loving homes and by creating as many opportunities as possible for the public to meet and get to know our dogs for the terrific pets they are meant to be. Our Adoption Process'|Here's a little about how things work: All CITY DOGS posted for adoption are available for direct adoption from the kennel, unless noted otherwise. A handful of dogs are only available for rescue pull, which can be for a variety of reasons. You can either stop in during our open hours to meet a dog or set up a meet and greet with your dog, which allows us to get the dog out of his/her cage for some exercise before you arrive. To set up a meet and greet, please email us at citydogs@city.cleveland.oh.us. About Our Dogs: All available dogs have been assessed. This assessment is a snapshot of who the dog is at that given time. Our dogs are strays and we cannot make any guarantees regarding behavior, temperament or health of any City Dog. We do not know what kind of home environment they were living in (i.e. with kids, other dogs or other cats), nor do we know if they are house trained. Everything we know about them is based on volunteer and staff observations. It is very had to tell with certainty whether a dog will be good with kids, cats or another dog. If you have kids in the home or another dog, we do require that they be present for a meet and greet with the dog you are considering or adoption. Health/Vaccinations: Dogs that are adopted directly from the kennel need to go to your personal vet within a week or so of leaving the kennel. They do have their DHPP, Rabies, and Bordetella vaccinations, are dewormed once and have a microchip. In addition, unfortunately many of the dogs do get kennel cough. This is not something that is contagious to people at all, but dogs that do have it will need to be on an antibiotic. (Less)

Talk about well-rounded! Spencer is the perfect mix of playful and snuggly. In the yard, he'll happily trot around on his own, exploring or playing with toys but he checks back with his person frequently, giving a reassuring tail wag or coming in for a butt scratch. Spencer is well-mannered enough to go to public events (and spends most of his time sitting in laps and gently greeting people). Any time he's out, be it on walks or hikes or just a quick session in the play yard, he spends his time 'swimming' around and between your legs, begging for pets. He wants most of all to curl up with his human and be adored. Even on a recent hike, he would stop to give a quick kiss to anyone that happened to be on his level. Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Pint-sized Casey is otherwise known as 'little mama.' She may have had a litter or two in the past but judging from her youthful, spunky personality, you'd never know it. She's young at heart and is a blast to watch in play group. She can run around with much larger dogs and still have a good time. Casey won't sneeze at one-on-one time with her human either and happily accepts butt scratches and pets. She's integrated well with the dogs in her foster home and proved to be both housebroken and crate-trained. Or email citydogs@city.cleveland.oh.us About Our Shelter'| CITY DOGS Cleveland is a program of Cleveland Animal Care & Control (CACC), located at 2690 W. 7th St. Cleveland, OH 44113. (Less)

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Her name is Amethyst because she's undoubtedly a gem. She may look a bit like a miniature hyena but there's nothing wild about this girl. In fact, she met a baby and bestowed the gentlest of licks on their face. Amethyst has a gentle mouth, taking treats delicately, and is learning to reliably sit for those treats. (She gets so excited for food!) Her warm, open sociability makes her a hit with people and she'll do the rounds to greet everyone. Likewise, she is social in our daily doggie playgroups (though she can be a bit of a mom when she thinks other dogs are being too rowdy). Amethyst would love to be your crown jewel. Check her out ... (Less)

Jiggs is a great middle-aged dog. He's currently in a volunteer foster home with 3 foster dog siblings. He is sweet, calm and friendly. If someone is looking for a companion dog for one or more dogs they already have--Jiggs would be an amazing addition. He is already housebroken, crate-trained and is tolerant of other dogs. While at the kennel he was a playgroup rockstar and that has continued in his foster home. He took a few weeks off of playing to recover from heartworm treatment. He's not a real fan of this snow or cold weather, unless it's to run off some pesky squirrels. He'd much rather curl up on the couch with you. 67lbs. 5 years, 10 months. (Less)

Compatibility: Good w/ Female Dogs Only, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

Diesel is a very sweet boy. He is amazing with young children and loves to snuggle. He plays with a 3 year child old daily. He knows how to sit, lay down, give paw and play fetch. He is neutered and house broken but doesn't do well in a crate. He does great off leash in our yard but has resistance to being on a leash when walked but not when on a lead outside. He's a bit of a home-body and prefers to be with his family and tends to get anxious when they leave so I sense there is some separation anxiety. He has never destroyed anything in our home and can be trusted to be left alone. He does well during bath time just doesn't enjoy it. He ... (Read More)has never shown any aggression towards his family and has a great temperment. The reason we are rehoming is the power struggles he's having with our other dog. There seems to be issues with resource guarding with toys, food and attention. Although this is the case, you can easily take toys and food from him without fear, it's only towards other dogs so he would probably best best in a home all to himself. We truly want this sweet boy to find a home that has a lot of love to offer because he deserves it. Please contact me.if you have any questions, I'm happy to answer any of them! (Less)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Very High Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Needs to be Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Pheobe needs a home where she has a lot of land to run/hunt. She gets along well with our other dog, though they vie for the Alpha spot. She is aggressive towards children but our dog trainer has said that that may change if she is able to get her energy out by running/hunting more. I homeschool five kids and I just don't have the kind of time that she needs. If we can't find a suitable home, my only option is to euthanize her. She is crate and potty trained. She is not spayed, but I will get that done if we find a suitable home for her.

Storm loves attention, sitting in your lap, and taking walks. He is an affection, playful, high energy pup. He's smart, quick learning, crate trained at night but would most likely be fine in a house without smaller pets, as he wants to play and a small animal might not be able to take his rough-housing. Storm needs a fence so he can run. His forever home needs someone who will play with him and dote on him. He's afraid of men, but with someone who will take the time to gently lure him in'|he will be (and has proven this) amazing. He's a big puppy mentally and physically. PIease Read Before Adopting a Pit Bull in Ohio
Pit Bull Dogs can make good pets in Ohio if they match your IifestyIe. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a powerful dog with an undeserved reputation for inherent viciousness. A Pit Bull that receives attention, firm training, and thorough socialization makes a wonderful family guardian that is trustworthy with children. Pit Bulls need committed, experienced owners that exude leadership. Pit Bulls excel at high level obedience with proper training. Pit Bulls have been bred for dog fights, and unfortunately a dog that is abused, neglected, or whose instinctive aggression is encouraged, can become hostile and dangerous. Pit Bulls can adapt to apartment life with enough exercise.

lnteresting Pit Bull Trivia Low-Cost Ohio Spay & Neuter Clinics
Some people believe that Pit Bulls are identical to what Bulldogs were in the past. Unfortunately, Pit Bulls are often used for illegal dog fighting. A disproportionate number of Pit Bulls are put down in major American cities each year. American Pit Bull Terriers are very similar, and some argue identical, to Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
