|Personality:|| Low Energy, Very Dominant |
|Health:|| Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Aggressive, Fearful/Anxious | I rescued my 5yr old boy George O'Malley from a shelter in Durham, NC, in January. It was a very spontaneous adoption because he was about to be put down, but I can honestly say it was the greatest decision I have ever made. George is all love. He is incredibly loyal, a good listener (when he wants to be), LOVES to cuddle (needs cuddles constantly and sleeps in bed with me), is extremely mellow when he isn't feeling threatened or afraid, is house trained, harness/leash trained, loves to go on hikes and walks, LOVES to swim at the beach, and just overall embodies the phrase 'man's best friend.' He is so good with people that once he is ... (Read More)comfortable with you he will literally let you file his nails, paint his nails (I had to try at least once, I couldn't help myself), and clean his ears with Q-Tips. One time he got a few cuts on his chin and he sat perfectly still while I cleaned the cuts, applied neosporin and a bandaid, and did not try to remove the bandaid at all. However, he was clearly never socialized as a puppy and therefore does NOT interact well with other dogs, and is very easily triggered. When I first adopted him we had a lot of problems with introducing him to new people because he would become extremely aggressive due to being overcome by fear and having never been taught how to interact with others. He now wears a muzzle when meeting new people and spending time in public places, he is on doggy prozac (yes it is a real thing and it is actually a lot more common than you would think!), and I had a behavior specialist come meet with him and do a full evaluation. He has improved a lot! He does SO MUCH BETTER with meeting new people and everybody falls in love with him immediately after meeting him. However things have not improved at all with other dogs. He still gets incredibly overwhelmed and threatened when around any other dogs. In June I tore my ACL and had to move home to my mom's house in Rhode Island for the remainder of the summer in order to get surgery. She has two dogs - a 16 year old Portuguese Water Dog and a 7 year old Schnauzer Poodle mix. Since I have been back home there have been two incidents where the dogs got to each other and Napolean and Mico ended up getting bitten. I adore my Georgie more than words can explain, but he is 65lbs of pure muscle and I am not going to be able to walk him/control him safely on my own again for at least 9 months. The idea of getting rid of my boy makes me physically ill, but I just cannot justify keeping him cooped up inside with me while I go through my recovery - the lack of exercise and fresh air is already getting to him and it has only been a week since my surgery. With his bite history and everything else I know it is going to be extremely difficult to find an organization/rescue that will take him in, but I truly believe that if he is with the right person/people in a home with no other dogs, he can be the best friend everybody dreams of. I have never experienced heartache like this before - I just want to do right by my beautiful, cuddly, silly, smart, life-loving little boy. (Less) Animal Location:
